Number eight with a bullet: Duffy gets the popular vote

Joe Duffy makes it into the most admired list for the first time.

He has been declared king of the airwaves based on his audience, and now Joe Duffy has made it into the top ten list of most admired broadcast personalities for the first time.

The ONSIDE Star Tracker 2016 found Duffy was the eight most admired TV and radio personality in the country.

Last month, Duffy became Ireland’s most listened-to personality on the airwaves after Liveline’s audience increased by 4,000 to 395,000. It is now the second most listened-to show in the country, behind Morning Ireland.

“The rise in numbers for stars like Joe Duffy in term of listenership scores is clearly translating on another level in terms of the depth of the wider public’s admiration for his talent, with more than 70,000 members of the Irish public now rating him as the best in the business in our research. Hone in on public admiration in the Dublin area and you see his rank jump to top four,” said John Trainor, chief executive of sponsorship consultants ONSIDE.

Ryan Tubridy retained the number one status as the most admired television or radio personality in Ireland for the third year in a row, with 12 per cent of adults naming him.

However, the battle for next in line now reveals a three-way tie between Ray D’Arcy, Pat Kenny and Miriam O’Callaghan who were second, third, and fourth respectively but the divide between the three was marginal.

Gay Byrne was in fifth place, while Ian Dempsey, Today FM’s breakfast show host, was the highest non-RTÉ name in the list in sixth place.

Rounding off the top 10 were Vincent Browne, Duffy, Brendan O’Carroll and Claire Byrne.
