THE UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has become one of the top 10 most admired sports personalities in the country, according to research by consultants Onside Sponsorship.
McGregor has entered the list in sixth place, placing him behind Irish soccer team assistant manager Roy Keane and golfer Rory McIlroy, who take the fourth and fifth places respectively.
The survey of more than 1,000 Irish people, which helps to assess the appeal of sports stars for potential sponsors, has been again topped by Brian O’Driscoll, with 17% of respondents singling him out at the sports personality they most admire.
Second on the list was Olympic gold medal-winning boxer Katie Taylor, while Paul O’Connell, captain of the Irish rugby team, was the sportsman who made the biggest gain in the poll, moving from sixth place to third position.
John Trainor, the chief executive of Onside, said: “These Irish stars remain in strong positions to content for the multi-million-euro endorsement market in Irish sponsorship for years to come.”
